Hi Blog!

So, back in the Kings City in the UK. moved into the new house, and tomorrow is my 1 year anniversary with my misses! A lot of good herading into the new year at Uni. but as i knew, and in full transperancy here, getting to this point has been one massive mess. and i want to talk a little about it just to kinda put it behind me.

It started round about 7 months ago. As we started looking for houses. a day prior to the first viewing, a major falling out happened in the group of people that were intending to move in somewhere together, and 2 of the 4 in question got cold feet. Their reasons being what they were. It left me and my love in a bit of peril, all the places would require minimum 3 usually 4 people for us to move in anywhere. And there we were as only two.

We went to the viewings we had set up regardless, all along trying our best to put together a new 4 person group to book a decent size house. One house in particular we both fell in love with. A little distance to uni, but not a trek up a mountain, in an area where everything was still close by. Busses, grocery stores, resturants. Nothing was missing even if it was a bit of a longer trip to uni.

That one was gone the very same day we had been to the viewing. and we realized, fuck. they go this fast!? What are we going to do? And so we kept looking. With a little time and effort we did manage to get a team together of 4 people. And discovered a property on the same street as the one we had loved from the previous viewing. this one was the spitting image of the first one in many ways. but it was managed by a private agent and landlord.

To explain, as a student, you get various options for accommodation, we had been in self catered halls at burma road the previous year, and found that it didn’t work, and we wanted more space and less people. then theres the option of Uni Managed housing, which means the uni owns the property, and any issue you have you take it with them directly, and fees are paid to them directly. if these properties are rented out, you have to go through a private agent. a 3rd party that deals with the legal between a landlord and tenant to make sure everything goes as it should.

With the 4 people in place, i went ahead and put down a holding fee, it covered taking the listing down and confirming the property as let out so noone could swoop in and take it. the second i got off the phone having transferred this and told my love that we have a place to live. I got the biggest hug that lasted hours, and thought that everything was in order.

For now.

a couple weeks after this arrangement, me and the misses are walking to winchester. And we notice that our property agents office had closed down.. thats curious, they must have moved we thought. and they havent told us anything about it, so our deal is propably still good and no worries.

I had some questions here and there, and sent emails to the address i had previously had correspondence on, i got no response on this, and found that i got increasingly tense about this. I hate not getting the answers in a direct fashion and preferrably in text form so i have something to go back to later in case of a misunderstanding or someone is flat out fucking wrong with what they tell me.

A couple months go by, at this point im in norway, working with a massive scandinavian energy company, doing material, specifically video for their marketing. one day i received an email for the letting agent that managed my new property, saying new legislation had been put in place, that stated i would be refunded my holding fee, because it was no longer legal for the letting agents to claim such a fee. Which at this point was the only real guarantee we had to keep the property. I called them asking a bit about it, got some details that i would get this refunded, and they blurted out in a single sentence that our letting agreement would be moved to a different agent… i thought nothing too much of it to begin with and carried on thinking that i had the property in hand.

On this day i was at my boss’s house shooting a video about the joys of BBQing and the social element to it. midway through the shoot, i get a phone call on my norwegian phone from a fella from the company Dybles.

Dybles is the new letting agent that had taken over our property. the first question i got was one of “do you still want that property” Shock grabbed me by the genitals. Wasnt this set in stone that i had the property i asked the gentleman on the phone. and he laid into the former agent that they were useless and that they hadnt informed me of a bunch of stuff that all became white noise as he dreared on.

When he finished shitting on his former and now closed down competitor. i asked, “so what do i do to get this property that i thought i had?” “No worries, i need a holding fee and some personal details.” is the answer he gave me. We talked back and forth as i had just been refunded one of those. and he argued a correct point that what else ties me to that property if there isnt something to hold me to in monetary terms. i acquiesce and forward him a holding fee.

He sends me an agreement to sign, and tells me to sign it asap. This is a legally binding document that concerns me and 3 other people and i’m being told to just sign it flat out. I read through, and not one piece of info on this agreement is correct beyond the address. the rent is different, the arrangement for deposit is different. nothing we had agreed to initially is on this document that i’m asked to sign. And so finally for the first time in my life, i entered negotiation, and sent countless emails back and forth discussing terms, what we had been promised, told, what was expected, what had sold us on the property. argued about language of the contract. this took several months. It wasn’t until a month before moving in that we had all the stuff in text as we had previously agreed upon with the other office.

as if on que, another more serious issue starting bubbling to the surface. the group of 4 noticed that one member wasn’t really responding much to anything. And when it came time to sign the first part of the agreement, a week before moving. the 4th person started responding, and told us, they werent moving in anyway. Effectively risking all of our stays a week before we go back. i was livid. when i saw the message, i was about a split second shy of putting my fist right through my computer screen. I didn’t know this person all too well, but its one of those never trust a stranger situations where i assumed someone would be worth their salt, and came to find out that it wasnt the case.

And so with a week to go, having negotiated and worked an entire summer and the entire year to that point around getting this property. i had it, i was so fed up and beyond pissed that everything got to me in a split second. i took the sole responsibility on getting this place. And it weighed on my mind. and i told the other two tenants that i will not be happy and relax on this until i close the front door behind me and enter the building.

After some more discussions with Dybles, we agreed that the 3 of us could stay there granted we covered the 4th persons costs. Which is a hefty sum of money to be covering, but we have a place to stay now. and that is absolutely the main thing. the 4th person can and will be arranged in due time.

So thats a story. secondly though and more interestingly, i am a business owner now! its a registered firm in the norwegian business registry, and i will be ramping up a lot of production and business relating to that very soon. this website included! can’t wait!!
